Yamagata University Exchange Program (STEP-YU) – Fall 2026
Chiang Mai University, through the International Relations Division, has received an announcement from Yamagata University, Japan, regarding the Yamagata University Exchange Program (STEP-YU), scheduled from October 2026 to March 2027.
The program offers two tracks:
1. General (Ippan) Exchange Program
Designed for undergraduate and graduate students who wish to enroll in courses taught in Japanese.
- Applicants must have Japanese language proficiency at JLPT N2 level or higher
2. Japan Studies Program (JSP)
Designed for undergraduate students who wish to study Japanese language and culture in English.
- Applicants must have:
- JLPT N3, or
- English proficiency at CEFR B2 level or higher
Students selected for the exchange program will receive a tuition fee waiver, while all other expenses, including travel, accommodation, and personal costs, will be the responsibility of the participants.
Applicant Qualifications
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Must have completed at least one academic year at their home university
- Must not be in their final semester
Required Application Documents
Applicants are required to prepare the following documents:
- Application Form (Word format)
- Japanese Language Proficiency Certificate (e.g., JLPT or equivalent)
- English Proficiency Certificate (if required)
- Plan of Study or Research (Word format)
- Two Letters of Recommendation
- Health Examination Report
- Photo Document (Word format)
- Application for Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) with financial proof
- Copy of Passport (biographical page)
- Academic Transcript
- Application Form for Residence Approval
